The McDaniel`s, The Berryman`s & The Dishman`s

As you may be aware, if you have been following my blog for any length of time, I have been on the quest to find the parents of my paternal third great grandfather one Allen McDANIEL.

In order to locate him I have been using a combination of my genetic geneaology (DNA) and an old fashioned paper trail to lead me to them.

There are some commonalities within a few things that I did want to share here with you this evening. I am hoping some seasoned researcher out there will see this and can help me put the pieces together.

As I have spoke in times past, I look at each piece of my family history as pieces to a jigsaw puzzle. So here in this post I will be sharing a few of those pieces with you.

Some time ago I was introduced to some cousins via the Gedmatch website. Shortly thereafter I joined their group on Facebook (which regrettably I had to leave for a time due to the birth of our grandson and family issues taking up the biggest part of my time).  We all noted that we seemed to have a common tie to a gentleman named: Benjamin BERRYMAN.

Back then I could not make heads nor tails of that information as I had never heard the name before in all of my years of research.  Fast forward to this week and I will tell you some things that I have recently uncovered within the course of my research.

1. I found a Benjamin BERRYMAN living next to who I suspect is my 4th Great Grandfather one Allin McDANIEL in Rowan County, North Carolina.
2.One of said Benjamin BERRYMAN`s sons married a DISHMAN.
3.The DISHMAN family married into my EADS/EADES Family
4. The McDANIEL married into my EADS/EADES Family.
5.One of my cousins has who he believes to be his Great Grandfather (forgot how many generations back) named Joseph STEGALD who married one Sarah Luna McDANIEL. I do not know just how but I would be willing to bet that said Sarah is kin to my McDANIEL family.

Benjamin BERRYMAN Sr was born 7 December, 1699 in Westmoreland County, Virginia.  He married one, Elizabeth NEWTON.
It appears their son: James BERRYMAN married one Sarah DISHMAN.  There is a DISHMAN family website that lists some information for James BERRYMAN and wife Sarah DISHMAN.
That website is located HERE. There are lots of marriages between the DISHMAN, McDANIEL and BERRYMAN families.

My question is: Just how does this BERRYMAN family connect to me? Who were my fourth great grandparents?

Barrett Family Relations

Through autosomal DNA testing I have been able to confirm much of my family tree that I otherwise would not have been certain of. Let me just say that if you are a female and are hesitant to test because you have been told or perhaps wondered that you might not be able to get anything from your fathers DNA, let me just say that is one hundred percent not true! I am about to share with you a Paternal Match for me. This came about through my own DNA testing at 23andMe.

Just this morning I discovered not one but two distant cousins that connect to me through the BARRETT family. One is my 5th Cousin, 2 times removed and her daughter, my 6th Cousin, 1 time removed. My 6th Great Grandparents Johnathan A BARRETT and Elizabeth Betsy HENDERSON. I descend through their son Johnathan David BARRETT & wife Margaret GILPIN, their daughter Mary Polly BARRETT married my 4th Great Grandfather Ezekiel EADES, at this point in time I am uncertain who Ezekiel`s parents were, I am sure that I will get those names eventually though. My matches descend through Johnathan BARRETT and Elizabeth HENDERSON`s Daughter Jerusha Eliza BARRETT who married John KELLER.

It appears as thought Grandfather Johnathan A BARRETT may have been married twice. There is a story shared on Ancestry by one with the username: SesterHamby that states the following:

"According to one story, Jonathan Barret (Baroth) was a native of Wales.Another story says, without any definite proof, that he was born in Virginia.
Jonathan married and had two daughters, Bathsheba and perhaps Elizabeth. They
were Quakers as evidenced by their biblical names. Some records say that his
wife was a German or Jarman (which is Welsh). She died in Virginia. Jonathan
moved into North Carolina as an early pioneer in what was Wilkes County, but is
now Alexander County. He sent for his daughters after he had established a
home there.

Bishop Spangenburg's Journal in 1752 mentions Jonathan as a pioneer who lived
in Wittenberg Township. A mountain which is partly in Wittenberg and partly in
Ellendale, North Carolina is named Barrett's Mountain. He opened up a road
leading from a point on the mountain and along the crest of the bank of the
North Canyon of the Catawba River to the Little River. He entered a large
tract of land lying in Wittenberg, bounded by the Catawba River on the south,
Middle Little River on the west and Mountain or Mill Creek on the north.

Jonathan's daughter of the first marriage, Bathsheba, married Samuel Oxford in
1765. Bathsheba's and Samuel's first child was born in 1766. Jonathan lived
on the mountain which still bears his name and Samuel Oxford lived at the foot
of the mountain on the Catawba River at Oxford Ford. So Samuel must have
climbed the mountain to go a' courtin' Bathsheba Barrett. The mountain is not
a high mountain, more like a hill. There is a lake called Oxford Lake nearby
and the Duke Power Company has a power plant on the Catawba River called the
Oxford Dam.

After Jonathan came to North Carolina, he married, according to the papers of
Virginia Alice Meek and a Keller family record in the Genealogy Division of the
Indiana State Library, Elizabeth Henderson from the New England States. By her
he had several childred: Jonathan, Jr. and another son, Gerusha, and several
other daughters. Gerusha was born March 4, 1761 and on her eighteenth
birthday married John Keller. Jonathan Keller, Jr. was a sailor in the
Revolutionary War. He was born in 1757.

Jonathan Barrett, Sr. was a member of the Granville County, NC, Colonial
Militia in 1755.

A history of Alexander County says, "In 1788 the General Assembly passed an act
to encourage the building of iron works in the state of North Caroline. Any
person fulfilling the conditions could obtain land and be exempt from taxes for
10 years. So an Andrew Baird obtained 18,000 acres, beginning in Lower Little
River to Samuel Oxford's line, etc., etc., thence north around the end of
Barrett's Mountain to the beginning". Apparently Andrew Baird sold tracts of
land to several persons, among whom were Martin and Christine Keller.

In Frederick County, Virginia there was a family of Quaker Barretts.
A will of Benjamin Barrett, August 5, 1777 showed the following:
Wife was Elenor; sons: Thomas, Benjamin, Richard and Jonathan. Sons John and
David were infants. Duaghters: Phoebe and Lydia. Benjamin was the son of Arthur Barrett."

According to the above information it appears that grandfather Johnathan BARRETT may have been married twice. There are two possible wives showing up in prelimenary research: Elizabeth Betsy HENDERSON and Jarmin "Jar-Fly" HAGLER. Further research is warranted by this researcher in order to ascertain if both of these women were indeed his wife. I will update this post with my findings.
Johnathan's Parents, my 7th Great Grandparents were Johnathan BARRET and Sarah STEVENS.

A Compilation that may be of interest to other researchers who have connection to this BARRETT family line is: Genealogy of some of the Descendants of Thomas BARRETT of Braintree, Massachusetts This is a book that Google has archived in the Open Library. I have yet to read through it but did want to share it here for others who are interested in researching our BARRETT line.

A Genealogy of the Eads Family

Today I wanted to share with you something that I found that I feel will be of interest to others who are researching the EADS family. I stumbled upon an Ebook created by one Donald LeRoy Eads M.D.

I have yet to read through all of Dr. Eads book but I do look forward to getting into it as time permits. It appears he has put a lot of thought and hard work into it, which is something I can appreciate. I did take a quick peek at it and noticed some surnames that are coming up as cousin matches in my DNA results. I am hoping that this material will help me to narrow down those folks since I am most sure they come from my Paternal side of the family. Check out his book and be sure to thank him for his hard work and for sharing with us!

EADES & VEST Connections

In this post I am going to look at the connections between the EADS family and the VEST family.

I am looking precisley at my 4th Great Grandfather: Ezekiel EADES. Ezekiel was born about 1774 in Rowan County, North Carolina. On 12 January, 1799 in Rowan County, he married my Great x 4 Grandmother, Mary Polly BARROT. I am unsure who Grandmother Polly`s parents were, at this time.

Grandfather Ezekiel and Grandmother Polly had several children. On the 1820 Census there are 10 members total counted as living in the household. I personally can only account for the names of four of their children. This census lists the following household members:

• 2 Males under 10 (??? & ???)
• 1 Male 10-15 (Gilpen)
• 1 Male 16-18 (John Sr)
• 2 Males 16-25 (only count one of these males, see below) (Issac Ransom)
• 1 Male 45 and over (Ezekiel)
• 2 Females under 10 (Sarah Jane & ??? )
• 1 Female 10-15 (???)
• 1 Female 26-44 (Polly)

These older census records can sometimes be confusing because it appears as though they count members of the family twice. For example, the column that looks at Males 16-18 and another one that looks at Males 16-25. A male from 16-18 could be counted twice and entered in both columns. 

So, in this case we see that we have 2 males listed as being 16-25 and only 1 listed in the 16-18 bracket, therefore we should not count this as being 3 men, but rather 2, as the second one was likely counted twice. 

So, with that in mind we should look at this family as having the parents and 7 children.as the total count would really only be 9 since we have eliminated one male in the above age brackets. 

I notice during this research that there are two sons listed by the name John EADS. My Great x 3 Grandfather was John EADS. So one of these is him. One is listed as having the birth year of 1796 and the other with a birth year of 1815. I did not include the one with the 1796 birth year in the census above. I need to do some further research and see if one of these John gentleman can be eliminated.  I will update in another post once I am sure about this.

There is another marriage record for a Ezekiel EADS and Hannah VEST. I find this Ezekiel and wife Hannah on the 1850 Census and they are neighbors to one Harvey, Melissa, Polly and William VEST. I have to wonder if perhaps these were Hannah`s family. 

There is so much I do not know about my Grandfather Ezekiel EADS. I have thought perhaps Polly could be a second wife for him. I am going to be researching him in more detail in the next few days. This is not the only EADS & VEST Connection. My 3rd Great Grandfather`s brother and Ezekiels Son Gilpen EADS married a Martha Patsey VEST.  At this point in time I am unsure who Patsey`s parents were also and how they fit in.

Update on Consadie EADES Part 2

This post is a continuation of my prior post updating some new information on Consadie EADES-MCDANIEL that I wanted to share with my readers.

When we left off I was speaking about Ms. Wilson, in her article having stated that Albert MCDANIEL was the son of George and Merkie MCDANIEL and how I have not proven that statement to be true.

I did some thinking and granted this only a hypothetical statement and I do not have anything to back it up. I am only listing it here to see what others might think about it. Ms. Wilson was adamant about the fathers name being George and the mother being Merkie. We have ruled out George Washington MCDANIEL and America COPE. So lets assume that perhaps Allen MCDANIEL and Rebecca BART were actually named: George Allen MCDANIEL and America Rebecca BART? Bear with me for a minute. Naming traditions a lot of the times hold to the fact that parents name their first born after themselves and or grandparents. So, we can see that Allen and Rebecca`s first son was named: George and their daughter (My great x 2 Grandmother) was named: Amanda "America" Clementine McDANIEL. Perhaps they named their children after themselves? Its not far fetched, but is only my thinking. I intend to do some research to see if I can turn up any records that might point to this. Let me first say, I know one of the golden rules in Geneaology is to never assume anything. So, please let it be known this is ONLY an assumption on my part and I cannot prove it with facts, as of yet. So, take it for what its worth. If that is not the case then I have no clue where she got those names for Albert`s parents as my information proves that his parents were Allen MCDANIEL and Rebecca BART.

I want to share with you a census record from the year 1870. One should always pay close attention to the neighbors living nearby when you do research on any family. Often they are extended family members living in the family farm or nearby.

Lets take a look at each of the households represented on this census. I will number them and label their members below.

I think that the 1870 census clearly shows us how these folks are related one to another. This looks to be the land or farm owned by Gilpen EADES as Ms. Speece was referencing in her article. (See Post 1). Lets explore those relationships.

1. Alfred MCDANIEL in household # 42 are the daughter and son in law of Gilpen and Patsey. Emeline is Jennie Jane EADES.
2. Lewis MCDANIEL in household #43 is the son of Allen MCDANIEL and Rebecca BART, his wife Rainey is the daughter of Gilpen and Patsey EADES.
3. Beccie DANIELS listed in household #44 is Rebecca BART, wife of Allen MCDANIEL and mother of Alfred, Lewis, Albert MCDANIEL.These boys married daughters of Gilpen and Patsey.
4. Household #45 is Albert and Consadie (Albert is living next door to his mother Rebecca and his father in law Gilpen EADES)
5. Household # 46 is Thelbert DISHMON. (Thomas Athlelbert DISHMON and his wife Nancy, Nancy is the daughter of Gilpen EADES)
6. Household # 47- Melvina Lavina EADES daughter of Gilpen & Patsey she married Alexander Ellis DAVIS.

I am not sure at this time where the WILLIAMS family fits in but know they tie in somehow. Please note that Melvina and Alexander DAVIS had a daughter and they named her: America Merila (Merky) DAVIS. So in that case we can see that the name America was shortened to Merky.

Note: I am not certain that the above Alfred MCDANIEL is the son of Rebecca and Allen MCDANIEL. I have to do some more research to see where he fits in at. 

Stay tuned for more updates. I think I have conclusivley proved time and again that Consadie EADES married Albert Allen MCDANIEL and that Albert Allen MCDANIEL was the son of Allen MCDANIEL and Rebecca BART. What more does anyone need to see this fact? The records speak for themselves.

Update on Consadie EADES MCDANIEL

Part One (See Part 2 for the continuation of this post after reading this one)

Today I have been doing some more research on the MCDANIEL and EADES families. Namely Consadie and Allen MCDANIEL.

The Iredell County Genealogical Society was kind enough to send me a copy of the article written on the  McDANIEL family contributed by Hazel Speece WILSON (See my prior posts for more on said article).

After having read through the article I decided to do some more research. I know there has been some confusion in the past as to the actual name for Consadie. I have seen it spelled in a variety of ways. I have put together a table with the spellings from each of the census years along with the spelling on her death certificate.



As you can see she has often been referred to as Fanny, Cansada, Cansady, Kansadie and even Soda! I have also seen the name MCDANIEL being written in a variety of ways. Take a look at the spelling on the 1930 census, they spelled it DANTIS.  I have seen DANIELS, DANIEL, MCDANIEL, MCDANIELS. MCDONNELL, MCDONALD......etc.

This week during my Genealogical studies we were learning about how we need to pay close attention to names and their derivatives.  Surnames often change through the years as well.

In the article that I got in today`s mail , Ms. Wilson stated that Consadie married Albert McDANIEL who was the son of George and Merkie MCDANIEL. That has puzzled me for some time because I clearly find him living in the house with Allen and Rebecca MCDANIEL and is listed as their son. So, given that bit of information I decided to go back into my files and see what I could find.

The only logical person that made since name wise was Allen`s brother, George Washington MCDANIEL and his wife America Loutisha COPE PARKS. Now it is obvious that there is no way that Allen could have been the son of his brother George and his wife America. But I kept wondering where Ms. Wilson could have gotten the name "Merkie" from? The only thing that made since was a derivative of America aka Merica or Merkie?? So, I decided to see if I could find anyone else in the area named George MCDANIEL with a wife named Merkie.

There is a second George Washington MCDANIELS and he married one Susannah "Susan" WILLIAMS. This George was the son of John Allen MCDANIEL and Rachael STEWART.  This George had a son named Albert Spencer MCDANIEL but he married one  Ida Jane SUMMERS. This Albert was born in 1867 in Davie County, North Carolina. In 1900 he was living with his wife Ida and there children so this rules this Albert MCDANIEL out, he could not be two places at once so there is no way he could have been Consadie`s husband.

The third George McDANIELS that I found was a son of  Lewis MCDANIELS and Rainey A. T. EADES, remember that Rainey was the sister to Consadie.  Lewis was the son of Allen MCDANIEL and Rebecca BART. This George was born in 1874. He married one Mary Jane RUPARD. Mary was the daughter of Caleb Phillip RUPARD and Lellice L CASEY. To my knowledge they did not have a son named Albert.

John & Ezekiel EADES of North Carolina

Today's post is going to be dealing with my 3rd Great Grandfather John EADES and his parents as well as his son, who by the way is also named John.

Apparently there are several men with the name John EADES from North Carolina as well as there are several men with the name Ezekiel EADES.

It took me a bit to figure out how each of these men directly fit into my line. I still have some work to do on each of them but this entry is going to be the basis for my next research project.

Note: Information posted in this entry is in the beginning stages of my research and some or all of it may change in the future as I uncover new details and sources to back them up. Information gleaned from this particular post should be used only as "clues" and back them up with your own in-depth research. 

For years I have been told that my 3rd great grandfathers name was: John EADES/EADS who married a woman named Louisa Jane LACKEY. I think that at this point in time I can safely conclude that that is an erroneous bit of information.

John EADES who married Louisa Jane LACKEY is instead my 2nd Great, Grand Uncle. It appears as though his name may have been: John Jack EADES and his first wife was Louisa Jane LACKEY and his second wife: Mary Manly COLLINS. Mary was previously married to one Henderson COLLINS and to my knowledge nobody currently knows Mary`s maiden name. Some have suggested Manly, however it has not been proven that I am aware of.

This John EADES was a brother to my 2nd Great Grandfather William Franklin "Frank" EADES Sr and they both are the sons of one John EADES Sr. who married Mary Polly MASSEY. It appears that John Sr. may be the son of one Ezekiel EADES and his wife Mary Polly BARRETT.

Now, I have uncovered the fact that there at least three and maybe four men with the name Ezekiel EADES residing in North Carolina around the same time. It is going to be my mission to sort these men and see if they may be somehow related or connected one to another.

To the best of my knowledge at this point in time my 4th Great Grandfather Ezekiel EADES was born in Rowan County in the year 1774. He married my 4th Great Grandmother Mary Polly BARRET on 12 January, 1799 in Rowan County, North Carolina.

The marriage date and their suggested years of birth are currently all the information I have on this elusive couple. Ezekiel was born abt. 1774 and I do not have a birth date for Polly. However, some have suggested she died in 1886 after having lived in Rowan NC all her life. I do however have a Civil War file on one Ezekiel EADES that I have yet to filter through and cannot say for certain that it applies to him, it may belong to another man with the same name. I will be going through that this evening and seeing if it doe tie into him. If so, I will post an update on the research projects page of this website.

If anyone has any sourced information on this couple I would appreciate hearing from you! In the meantime I can say that I have been researching the history of Rowan County and will be adding said information from my findings to this website soon. I have found EADES relation in the following North Carolina counties during the 1700-late 1800 periods:

• Wilkes County
• Alexander County
• Iredell County
• Rowan County
• Catawaba County
• Davie County

The above list is in no particular order, I just listed them in the order that I remembered them from my research. It also should not be considered an all inclusive listing. From what I can gather these counties surrounded one another and may have in fact been a part of one another at some point in time due to boundary changes.

I have located members of the LACKEY family prominently residing in Alexander County, North Carolina specifically. I have also located members of the BARRETT family as well. I am unsure who the parents of my Great Grandmother Mary Polly BARRETT is at this point in time.

Joel Sylvester (Julus S.) Eades

According to information contained within his Death Certificate:Joel Sylvester Eades aka Julus S. Eades was born 25 January, 1860 in North Carolina (most likely Iredell County). He was the son of Alfred Eades and his first wife, who at this time appears to have been named: Mathusha McDaniels. See my note at the bottom of the listing for Alfred Eades for more information on my current theory as to who his mother really is. The death certificate goes on to state his date of death as: 25 July, 1944. His wife`s name is listed as: Ellen Eades.

Now, lets create a timeline for Joel and note that these are in no particular order.

I decided to begin with the 1920 Census which is the first one I came across that listed Joel. At the time this census was taken Joel was 62 years old and his year of birth is listed as 1858 in North Carolina. He is listed as being widowed. He is living in the household of one William Aldrich and wife Cora.

I was able to track down a Death Certificate for Joel`s wife, it appears as though he often went by the nickname:Jule Eads. Here is the info gleaned from his wifes death certificate:

Born: 4 March 1867 somewhere in Missouri
She was 77 yrs, 7 mos, 24 days of age at the time of her death.
She was a Housewife
Her Parents names were not listed and unknown.
The informant was listed as: John Waller
She is listed as being Widowed
She died 28 October, 1944 in Piedmont, Wayne, Missouri
Cause of Death: Pneumonia, Influenza, Aortic Stenosis
Buried at: Mill Creek MillSpring Cemetery

   Ok, so it appears as though the above Ellen must have been a second wife for Joel. As he states in earlier census records that he is a Widower and given the fact he never appears in any census I have found with a wife, I have come to the conconclusion that he must have married a second time after the latest census record I have in 1940. He died in July of 1944 and then this wife Ellen passed away in October of that same year so they could not have been married long.

Alfred Eads was born 18 March, 1840 in Iredell County, North Carolina. Eads was the son of John Eads and Mary Polly Eads nee Massey.

1864 Confederate Service Record-Muster Roll:

This record shows that Alfred Eads served in the 1st Company A- in the Thirty-Fourth Infantry, Confederate Side. It shows his date of Enlistment to be:1 April 1864. He served for a period of three years at what looks like Camp Vance. From May-June 1864 his record shows him to be Missing in Action as listed on page 3 of his File. July-August 1864, shows him to be in absences as in arrest.Page 5 of his Muster Roll states that he has been absent without leave since 23 May 1864. Said page was dated Sept-Oct. 1864.

Prisoner of War Roll-Point Lookout Maryland:

This document shows him arriving in Port Royal, VA. 30 May, 1864. He was captured at Hanover Junction, May 23rd, 1864, exchanged 18 Sept. 1864.

The next Military Document that I have for Alfred Eads is:Roll of Prisoners of War-Page 7:

Paroled at Point Lookout, MD and transferred to Aikens Landing, Virginia 18 Sept. 1864, for exchange There is a notation at the bottom of this page of his record that reads:

"Recieved, Varina, Va,Sept.22, `64, from Jno E Mulford,Major and Asst. Agent for Exchange, ten hundred and eighty (1080) Confederate paroled prisoners of war on within rolls, including 64 officers,6 surgeons and chaplains, and 3 citizens. -W.H Hatch  Asst agent of Exchange [Taken from Roll No.150, Fort Delaware,Del.]

Appears on Register of Medical Directors Office, Richmond, VA

It states:Winder Hospital to 1 October, 1864. Statesville, North Carolina is listed under the Remarks Section.

Appears on a list of passports furnished to furloughed and transferred men in General Hospital Camp Winder at Richmond, VA for the week ending 1 October, 1864:

Date 28 September, 1864, Statesville, NC.

Page 10- Register of Medical Directors Office, Richmond, VA This page of his file states that he was admitted to the hospital on 23 September, 1864.  His Disease is listed as Scorbutus. What is Scorbutus? It appears to be some form of Scurvy. You will find information at the link and it talks about how common it was for the men who served in the Civil War.

Page 11- Register of C. S.A Hospital in Richmond, VA:

This record shows again that his diagnosis was Scorbutus and he was admitted 23 Sept. 1864 but this one goes on to state that he was given a 60 day furghlough on 4 Oct. 1864.

Page 12- Appears on Register of Receiving and Wayside Hospital-or General Hospital No. 9, Richmond, Virginia.

Admitted 22 Sept. 1864-Disposition: Winder (Name of the Hospital)

He served a total of 3 years in the service which would be the years 1864-1867

Note: It looks as though Alfred married someone probably in Iredell, North Carolina between the years of 1860 to 1867. I do not yet have her name or a marriage record, but will update when I do. We can also see from this census that Alfred was living in North Carolina in 1874 and after the birth of his daughter Jaine he must have moved to Tennessee somewhere because we see that his youngest son James was born in 1868 in Tennessee. His first wife must have passed away after the birth of their youngest James between the years of 1868-1870

During this Census Alfred was living with his second wife Letitia McDaniel Eads  in Mill Spring, Wayne, Missouri. Letitia was the sister of my Grandmother Amanda America Clementine McDaniel Eads and Alfred was the brother of my Grandfather William Franklin Eads, thus he was my Grand Uncle.

In order to try and track down the name of Alfred`s first wife I am going to do some digging on his children with her, whom I will list my findings below once I have came up with anything concrete. Stay tuned!

UPDATE NOTE: Special Thanks for the Photo used in this post goes to Charles Garrett who took the time to photograph the stone and create the memorial on Find A Grave website. Charles has generously given me permission to use the photograph on this blog and also transferred the memorial he created to me to manage. It appears as though the tombstone is new and so I am wondering which family member bought the stone and had it set? Charles tells me that there is also a second memorial created for Alfred in another Cemetery. I am doing some digging to find out which memorial should be the correct one. Will update when I know more.

Charles was also able to track down a Death Certificate for Alfred`s son listed on the census as:Julius S. His actual name was: Joseph Sylvester Eades. Now that I have that information I may be able to track down the name of these three children`s Mother. The name listed on the Death Certificate is to me illegible.  It appears to be: "Matusha McDaniels" now I have to wonder if this is a misspelling for "Lutisha McDaniels" or perhaps it one of her sisters? She has a sister named: Mary McDaniels which I have been unable to track down this far. At any rate this bears some further research so I am going to open a post on Joseph Sylvester (Julus S. Eades) and continue this post there.


3/17/2013- It appears that Alfred`s daughter Sarah was named: Sarah Ellen Eads and she married a Ford. Alfred & Letitia also had a son named Noah.

Ezekiel Eads Sr

Ezekiel Eads/Eades Sr is the main person that I have been able to trace my lineage to thus far. He was born Circa 1773 in Rowan County, North Carolina. I am not real certain of his exact place of birth as of yet. So please do not use that date as concrete until I am able to verify it some how. 

There is a marriage record between Ezekiel Eades and Polly Barret/Barrot for 12 January 1799 in Rowan, North Carolina.

1860 Census for The Upper Division, Wilkes County, North Carolina we find:

• Ezekiel Eades age 86
• Hannah Eades age 50

The above record states that Ezekiel and Hannah both were born in North Carolina. I assume this Hannah to be one Hannah Vest of whom I have also located a marriage record between her and Ezekiel Eades they were married abt 1854. Apparently researchers believe that Ezekiel first married Polly and they had children and then when she died he married the widow Vest and she also had children from a prior marriage as well.

Now to confuse things even more another researcher states she has found the following record concerning Ezekiel and his marriage to Polly:
 -Ezekiel Eades m. Polly Barrett on Jan. 12, 1829 Lexington, Davidson Co., NC--this taken from online Family Search International Genealogical Index Batch #5007487, Sheet 22. Also noted in NC Birth, Marriage, Death Records, no further info. known at this time. (2006,CarolBall12)

I am going to list here a reply that I also made on the message above back in 2009:

 Ok, I know these posts are a few years old but I am also doing research on my EADS family and have been for years. I would like to make some corrections as I see it to these confusing posts here. lol First off let me say that my Great, Great, Grandfather was William Franklin EADS who married Amanda America Clementine MCDANIEL-EADS. In the Goodspeeds History of Southeast Missouri, Great, Grandfather William stated his parents were John EADS and Mary Polly MASSEY. There is some confusion online as to which John EADS, I have often seen posts referring to him being the son of John EADS and Louisa Jane LACKEY. That isnt true. The John EADS JR that married Louisa Jane LACKEY was the brother of William Franklin EADS and they both are the son of John EADS SR. I can prove it with the 1860 Census for Iredell County, North Carolina South of Iredell Creek:

Jane Eads-age 35-born abt 1825 in North Carolina

Great Grandfather William F EADS was often referred to as "Franklin" or "Frank" and his wife has often been referred to "Annie" or "Manda". Also, there seems to be some confusion as to whether Ezekiel EADS and Mary Polly BARRETT EADS had a daughter named Angeline and if you read the above posts you will get what I am referring too. I believe this to be an error, because if you note in the census info I listed above, there is a Mary EADS age 66 living in the household of John and Jane, this is their mother Mary Polly MASSEY-EADS and the two boys Franklin and Alfred are Marys Sons and Brother to John. Ok, the other census that people online are referring to regarding the father of John EADS SR as being Ezekiel EADS and Mary Polly BARRETT and having the daughter named Angeline, I do find a 1850 Census for Iredell North Carolina with a Man named Ezekiel EADS born abt 1825 and a wife named Mary also born abt 1825 along with a daughter named Angeline who was age 3 at the time the Census was taken. If you think about it there is no way this Ezekiel EADS could be the parents of John EADS who is the father of William F. John JR and Alfred, as he was born in 1825. Im thinking this Ezekiel was the brother to William F. John JR and Alfred EADS. Which leaves us back to square one, if there is an Ezekiel EADS who in fact is the father of John EADS SR, I have yet to find any documentation for him. That is why it is very important to pay very close attention to all these dates when we are doing research and find a supporting document to back it up. Can anyone else shed any light on this family and if in fact John`s father was Ezekiel EADS

Ok, it seems back then that my thinking was whether or not in fact Ezekiel Eades was the father of John Eades or not. Lets just say the jury is still out. I am doing some more research and just consider this post research notes if nothing else. I have done so much research on my husbands family over the past couple of years that I pretty much had lain aside my Eads research. I am devoting some time between college classes to get everything put together and documented. I would enjoy hearing from other researchers out there who may have something to add to this exploration!

  

Sarah Jane Eads Dishman

Jane Eads was the daughter of Ezekiel Eads and Mary Polly Barrot/Barret Eads.  She was born in the Mountains in Iredell County, in the area of New Hope,North Carolina about 1821.

Jane married one Silas Dishman. Silas is said to be the son of one James and Elizabeth Dishman of Virginia and Iredell County, North Carolina. Silas`s grandmother was Kizzah Dishman.  Sarah Jane and Silas had eight children together that I can account for:

Nancy Jane Eads Johnson

 Nancy Jane Eads was born abt. 1872 in Wayne County, Missouri she was the daughter of William Franklin Eads SR and Amanda America Clementine Eads nee McDaniel. Nancy died 1894. I am unable to locate a death record for Nancy.

Nancy was married to Joseph Dempsey Johnson son of Joseph Johnson. Joseph Dempsey Johnson was born 13 November, 1870 in Wayne County, Missouri and died  7 February, 1941 in Wayne, Missouri. 

Nancy and Joseph are buried at Bounds Cemetery in Wayne, Missouri. The date above for birth of Joseph Dempsey Johnson was taken from the cemetery transcriptions, however, it does not match up with the date of birth listed on the death certificate for Joseph Dempsey Johnson. The Death certificate states Joseph was born: November 8, 1870 and died 7 February, 1941 due to Malaria. Joseph was residing in Bernie, Stoddard, Missouri at the time of his death. His father is listed as Joe Johnson and mother unknown. The certificate informant was listed as A. Johnson of Bernie, Stoddard, Missouri.

I have located a marriage record between Ezekiel and a woman named Hannah Vest. It was dated 9 April 1854 in Wilkes County, North Carolina.

There is a Military Record filed for Ezekiel it states he was a Private in the North Carolina Infantry, 56th Regiment.  He served in 1862

Ezekiel is listed on the 1830 Census for Wilkes, North Carolina as well,

I have located a death certificate for a Lena Hager daughter of one Ezekiel Eads and Polly Jolley. I am uncertain at this point whether this is the same Ezekiel Eads, however I want to note that this Ezekiel has a daughter named Angeline perhaps Lena is short for Angelina? Now, it has been stated that the parents of John Eads (Ezekiel`s father) are Ezekiel Eads and Mary Polly Barrot. Perhaps this is a daughter of theirs. I am going to go ahead and list it here for now thought:

This Lena is estimated to have been born abt 1864 whereas Ezekiels daughter Angeline was born abt 1847 so there is a difference of 17 years there. Lena Eads married one S.X Hager and according to the record she died 12 Oct 1929 in Davidson, Iredell, North Carolina. She is buried at Fairview Cemetery.

I now have reason to believe the Lena I listed above is not the same Angeline Eads daughter of this Ezekiel Eads. I am working on some leads I have on her and will update as soon as I have new information.
