The name HARTLINE seems to be Anglo-Saxon and is of English Origin from what I have seen thus far. However, according to the website Hartlines in America the name is of German origin and a derivative of the German name: HERDLEIN. There were actually three spellings of the name as follows: HERDLEIN, HERTLEIN and HARDTLEIN.
One of the earliest HARTLINE persons with the surname HARTLINE in America was Martin HERTLEIN (1666-1723). He was a basket weaver and believed to be the brother of Nickolaus HERDLEIN.
Famous HARTLINE`s: Haldan Keffer HARTLINE- won the American Noble Prize in Physiology and Medicine.
Brian HARTLINE- American Football Wide Receiver
Mike HARTLINE-American Football Quarterback
According to Ancestry the top occupations for those with the HARTLINE surname were that of Farmer and Laborer followed by Shoemaker & Carpenter.
The name HARTLINE is also a town located in Grant County, Washington. It was named for an early settler John HARTLINE and it was incorporated officially on 6 March, 1907.
How I relate to the HARTLINE Family
My paternal Grandmother was Bertha Mae HARTLINE born 28 Sept 1913 in Malden, Dunklin, Missouri daughter of "Lack" John Newman HARTLINE & Alice Mae JOHNSON. Lack HARTLINE her father, was the son of one Henry HARTLINE and Mary GILBERT (some say that Henry also married Eliza GAMBILL) I have been uncertain at this point which of his wives is my Great Grandmother, however, I believe it to be Mary GILBERT as my DNA matches a lot of those with the GILBERT surname. At any rate it bears further research on my part. Henry HARTLINE came to America from Germany.
Your branch of the Hartline family also descends from my same forebearer, Henry Hartline. It appears he married at least three times, if not four. We are a separate immigration wave from the Hartlines in America group and possibly even a different locale. I would love to have a discussion offline if you are still interested in researching this branch.
