This week I have been attempting to learn how to use Genome Mate software. According to their website description Genome Mate is A Tool for Managing DNA Comparisons.
Im not going to go through each of the aspects of the software as you can find those by clicking the link above to get to their website. This post is mainly going to be about my experience using it thus far. I will probably update later once I have gotten the hang of it. Remember, it is Free and for that I am truly thankful because I can only imagine the stress and amount of work that went into creating it and keeping it updated in the first place. So with that being said I do not want to sound as though I am complaining or being ungrateful here.
My first opinion of the software upon opening it was Wow! This is so totally overwhelming. I even had second thoughts after looking through and finding out that most of my Data if not all was going to have to be input manually. I am pretty computer literate so I was able to catch on to most of that part pretty quick, however, if you are not, you might find it scary at first. There are some Introductory Videos on Youtube that will walk you through some of the basics.
Once I have gotten the hang of the program I will make some more posts with some screen shots and share some of the success I have had using it. If you are on Facebook there is a Genome Mate User Group there. It is relatively easy to ask for help and get some input there if you are having trouble.
For a long time I have been taking my matches from each of the DNA programs and inputting them in a Spreadsheet to see if I could manually triangulate them. Now that I have found Genome Mate I am going to give it a try in place of using the spreadsheets and see if it can help me triangulate my matches better. I am going to hang onto my spreadsheets and the Data I have input thus far just in case I can't get the hang of it or do not like the program that way I won't have to start over from Ground Zero.
If you have tested several places I recommend you download the program and give it a whirl! Until next time, Happy Hunting!
