Thankful Thursday: A New Leaf: A Great-Grand Aunt

This post is part of the Thankful Thursday Series
This morning about 12:35 a.m to be precise my first Great-Grand Nephew entered the world. He weighed in at 5 pounds, 15 ounces and was 19 inches long. He has been named: Liam Michael.
Do you have a name that has been handed down through the generations within your family? We have several. There are many reasons why a particular family may latch on to a name and hand it down through the generations, this one in particular is a very special name in our family. I am speaking of the name Michael. According to the baby name dictionary the name Michael means Who is like God?
I have an older brother whose name is Michael, he and my older sister were close growing up so when she had her middle child she gave him the name Michael Ray. I think she likely named him Michael after our brother. When Michael was 18 he had just became a Dad for the very first time and was so proud of his newborn son, who of course was given the middle name Michael after his father. Just two short months later my nephew Michael was tragically killed in a homicide.  So Michael`s older brother later had a second daughter and when she was born he named her Michaela Rae after his brother (She just happens to be Liam's mother). A few years later when that same brother finally had a son, he gave him the middle name Michael.  And last but not least the name Michael has been handed down to this new baby. Its a way our family has of honoring my nephew and keeping his memory alive.
What are some naming traditions that your family has?  I have done a lot of reflecting this past 24 hours, my sister is now officially a Great-Grandmother. How blessed she must feel having gotten to attend her Great-Grandson`s birth! I know that being a grandmother in of itself is a wonderful feeling as I have four precious grandchildren of my own, I can only imagine what it will be like to have Great-Grandchildren.
Sometimes all of these Greats and Grands can be confusing. Technically we would say that my Great Niece is really my Grand Niece and her child is my Great Grand Nephew. Ancestry has a good article on this very subject HERE. On this Thankful Thursday I can say I am thankful for this new little leaf on our tree, I smiled with pride as I added his name to our Family Tree Database.
By the way the name Liam means: Strong-Willed Warrior, that he is!
