Surname Saturday: McDaniel Surname

Today`s Surname Saturday post is about the surname McDaniel. My Paternal 3rd Great Grandmother was one Amanda America Clementine McDANIEL, daughter of Allen McDANIEL and Rebecca BART.
According to the Dictionary of American Family Names (2013), the surname McDANIEL is really an altered form of the Irish McDONNAL name. McDONNAL was the son of Donal. The name was actually taken from an incorrect association of the Gaelic patronymic with the personal name Daniel.

Our McDANIEL family has its origions in Scotland, in the West Coast of Scotland and the Rocky Herbrides Islands. This surname was actually first found in Argyleshire. Some of the McDANIEL family eventually migrated on to Ireland, before reaching the United States and Canada. According to the Ancestry Immigration Database there were more folks imigrating to America with the surname McDANIEL from the following countries: Ireland, Great Britian and England, followed by Monaghan,Willineca and finally Scotland.

The noted occupations for those with the McDANIEL surname were Farmers, Laborers followed by Housekeepers. More McDANIEL men fought on the Confederate Side of the Civil War than those on the Union side.

Our McDANIEL family in the United States was most prominently found in the areas of Davie and Rowan as well as Anson, North Carolina.
