James A. SMITH

In this post I am going to continuing my research on my 2nd Great Grandmother, Lucinda SMITH.

Lucinda and Charles had two children, My Great Grandmother, Dorthula Dalue and her brother James. Like his mother, little is known about James as well. This past week someone did contact with some information but at this point she is not certain as to what she has is even correct. So, this post is going to be looking into the information that she sent me along with some that I already had and we are going to try and see if we can make sense of it all.

James first appears on the 1880 Census for Saint Francis, Wayne County, Missouri. The census gives us a possible birth date of 1877.

I have been in contact with an ancestry user by the user name: ladybug5free, she sent me some information on James and I am listing that here below:

She has been looking for her grandfather and she believes that James SMITH in my Tree may in fact be him. She went on to state that her James died, after 1910, but before the 1930 Census.  She also states that her family members have told her the cause of his death was injuries which he sustained in a fight.

She further went on to inquire if any Native American was found in my DNA results. She made reference to her mother having had visits in the Spring time from a Native by the name of "Flying Eagle" she also stated that he was from a basket weaving tribe. She also stated that she was told that James was 3/4 Indian.

Now, let me elaborate on the above stories. First, I am not entirely certain that her James SMITH and my James SMITH are the same individual. It is quite possible though.  Secondly, I had a minute amount of Native American show up in my DNA. Not enough that one would think would come from a Great Grandmother or Grandfather with almost full blood as she indicates. I did a quick search on Basket Weavers and it seems that almost all Native tribes were into some sort of basket weaving, so that was not much of a clue to go on. I will keep that bit of information for further reference, however.

Let us look at the Laura REAGAN who did marry a James SMITH and see what we can glean from her information.

Laura REAGAN was born in September of 1883, somewhere in Illinois. She was the daughter of Perry REAGAN and Sarah Emeline OGDON.  In 1900 Laura was 16 years old and living in the house with her parents and her siblings. They lived in Bollinger Township in Wayne, County, Missouri.

Given the fact that Laura and her family were in Wayne County, Missouri near the time my SMITH family was there it stands to reason that her husband James may have been my Grand Uncle.

I have been unable to locate my James SMITH on the 1900 census anywhere. By 1900 James parents were not together anymore and his father Charles was living in the house with his parents Alexander Doc SMITH and Catherine WRIGHT-SMITH. James was not in the household, Lucinda is no where to be found and by that time Charles had already married Donia KOSINER and they were not together either! So, I have no clue where they were. I checked with my Great Grandmother, Dorthula and in 1900 she was already married and living in St Francois Township, Wayne County, Missouri with my Grandfather Frank EADS and two of their children Mollie and Charles.

Laura REAGAN and James A SMITH were married 24 August, 1901 in Bloomfield, Stoddard County, Missouri.
By 1910, James and Laura were living in Welch, Cape Girardeau, Missouri. By this time they had four children, John, Earl, Sarah and Carrie.
James died sometime after the 1910 Census but before the 1920 Census as in 1920 Laura is living with the children and she is listed as being Widowed.

I will pick this up again in another post.
