Columbus Franklin Eads

Columbus Franklin Eads was born 15 February, 1908 in Silva, Wayne County, Missouri. He was the son of William Franklin Eads Jr and Darthula Dalue "Dorothy" Eads nee Smith.

Columbus grew up in the St. Francois,Wayne county Missouri area and later moved with his mother Dorothy and brother Arnold to Granite City, Madison county, Illinois. They lived there during the 1930 Census.

On 20 September, 1932 in Bernie, Stoddard, Missouri he married one Bertha Mae Hartline daughter of Lack John Newman Hartline and Alice Mae Hartline nee Johnson.

Columbus and Bertha had two sons. My father, Floyd was born before their marriage on 8 February, 1932 and my uncle Lloyd Gene "Teddy" Eads was born 22 July 1934.

Columbus and Bertha resided in Bernie,Stoddard, Missouri. Their home was near the railroad tracks in Bernie. Grandmother Bertha contracted Tuberculosis when she was just twenty-eight years old and she passed away. My father loved his mother dearly, he had a tattoo engraved on his shoulder of a cross and some flowers that said: "In memory of Mother".  Grandma Bertha died on 13 May, 1941. Her death certificate gives her correct dates of birth and death. Her tombstone is incorrect. I believe my Uncle Ted is the one who got the tombstone and had it placed. Keep in mind that was bought several years after grandmother passed away and he was just relying on his memory which obviously failed him as far as her dates of birth and death go.  She is listed on the 1940 census, her tombstone states she passed in 1939 which is incorrect.

After Grandma passed away, Grandpa married a woman named Evelyn Rohan. He and Evelyn had seven children together. Lindell, Larry, Jerry, Randy, Rhonda Marlene, Rita, Robin. He and Evelyn did not remain together however and grandpa raised the children by himself.

Grandpa lived the remainder of his years at his home located at 925 McNew Drive in Bernie. He enjoyed shooting a good game of Pool. I remember mother telling me that he kept his house immaculate, she said he could clean as good as any woman could! I remember him cooking dinner for us quite a few times. I never got to meet my grandmother as she passed on before I was born but my Grandfather was a different story.

One memory in particular for me is a time when he called our house and asked to speak with me and he told me how there was a guy asking about me up at the pool hall and Grandpa told him he had better steer clear of me or he would regret it. Although I begged Grandpa to tell me just who it was that was asking to date me, he refused. He said in his own words: "He is a scoundrel and you don't need to know who he is!". He then relayed the message to my mother and of course whoever the guy was I never found out.

Grandpa passed away 23 January, 1992 in the hospital in Poplar Bluff, Missouri. He was laid to rest next to my Grandmother Bertha and my brother Mark.
