This post is part of the 52 Ancestors-52 Weeks Series.
Rachel Combs Acord was my 4th Great Grandmother, she was the daughter of Job Combs and Deborah Hopkins. Grandmother was born 1 January, 1771 in Powell's Fort in the Shenandoah Valley in West Virginia.
On 12 August, 1788 she married my 4th Great Grandfather John Eagert Acord. To this union were several Children born. My 3rd Great Grandfather Job Jacob Acord was one of them.
Lots of the Acord family members lived long prosperous lives. I carry the longevity gene and I firmly believe it came from my Acord ancestors. My 3rd Great Grand Uncle John "Old Jack" Acord is said to have lived to the ripe old age of 115!
Like lots of families there are some tales that have been handed down through the years regarding my grandmother Rachel. It is said that she was captured by a Native American and held captive for over two years, when she come home she is said to have given birth to two sons who were fathered by the Native American Man, my grandfather Job was one of them. I cannot say as to whether there is any truth to those stories or not but they are fun to explore. Speaking of stories I ran across a wonderful tale told about Grandmother Rachel and her escapades wrestling with a bear. You will have to check it out on the original authors blog HERE.
The Walton's is an old time favorite Television show of my husband and myself. I sometimes picture my Acord family who just so happened had a mountain of their own called Acords Mountain in West Virginia. One day I hope to go there and explore my own little piece of history set in the Shenandoah Valley and West Virginia. I wonder what their lives were like there.
Grandmother Rachael Combs-Acord was said to have been a woman of strong character, staunch, loyal and utterly fearless. She lived to be 95 years and 7 months of age (2011, A Bright Secret Blog).
